Conventions of Slasher sub-genre



Typical final girls




The Final Girl - confronts the killer, usually innocent or a virgin, overcomes the "monster", proves to be strong throughout. Usually plain and bland, brunette, represents a young innocent woman, the surviver. 

Monster/ psychotic killer who is usually masked - remains unknown, a mystery, generally revealed at the end. Uses voices or games to trick with characters.

Famous killer characters

Location - usually a small sub-urban town, where the characters are familiar with. Frequently isolated, deserted - to provoke curiosity. High schools (eg 'prom night'), summer camps or creepy houses are a common events for slashers to attack.

Weapons - sharp instruments used to attack. These include knives, swords, axes, machetes, arrows, chain-saws, power drills, hammers, spears, darts, pitch forks and hatchets.

Characters - frequently used character types include:
"Bimbo", prom queen, cheerleader or popular girl - usually the first to be slaughtered,  provocative, and "air head"/ "dumb blonde"
The jock/ the nice guy - popular male in school, usually has a girlfriend
The outcast - someone who goes against the rules, rebells or stands out
The "nerd" (who sometimes develops into the final girl) - has courage and strength
The killer - masked monster figure
